. and the popular tourist spot cape cod. reporter jennifer davis is live tonight in chat ham, massachusetts. good evening, jennifer. >> reporter: good evening. well, you know it has been raining pretty consistently here for several hours. at times those bands were pretty strong. but you are right, this storm was nowhere near as big or as strong as many had expected just a few days ago. still, the governor says even if it didn't reach category one status, this was still a very serious storm. >> we have had them before and we will have them again. >> reporter: after whipping the north carolina coastline with heavy wind and rain earl may be weakening at a quicker pace than expected. warnings are in effect around cape cod as well as martha's vineyard and nantucket. >> you can go out to an existing area shelter that has been set up at the high school. and they have snacks and drinks until we know exactly what's going to happen with the storm. >> reporter: the national hurricane center says most of earl's strong winds are expected to stay off cape cod. that's good news for those in the area. >> it can'

. jennifer davis is live in new orleans or rather orleans, massachusetts. jennifer, good to see you. business bouncing back here? >> hi there, rick. they sure hope. so it is a picture-perfect day on cape cape cod. blue skies, sunny, 80-degree weather. except not everyone is here that would be on a typical labor day weekend. no question there was but a few hundred people that lost power and very minor flooding. biggest hit was to questions like the orleans inn here. typically this would be a huge weekend for them. there is no question though owner ed moss says they have taken a hit. here is what he said. >> we are always 100% booked. today we do have rooms available. it is beautiful. we do have people coming in last-minute reservations. but we have never before had a labor day where we weren't totally booked. >> ed says typically they are 100% booked on labor day. rye now he put them at 60%. good news though the patio full of a lot of people eating at their restaurant. is he hoping in the next couple of days this weekend they will be able to bounce back. >> looks like a pretty time to sit out

into new york laguardia facing delays. jennifer davis is live in cape cod, massachusetts where the weather looks like picture perfect behind you. did earl make a dent? >> hi there, it doesn't get better than this. it's a spectacular day in cape cod, blue skies, a lovely wind about 80 degrees, it's fantastic. no it really no dent at all. it had a little effect here. take a look at the video. we passed by this wedding couple. you think a hurricane passing by isn't great for a wedding, it didn't affect them at all. they had a rehearsal outside in a tent and even though it rained it didn't cause any problems. it gives you a sense that people here just kept going about their business. >> gregg: good for jonathan and amanda. were businesses hurt by this and bouncing back? >> no question the biggest effect was to the businesses because there is really no damage to speak of except for them. for example, if you take a look behind me, this is just a little bit down from chat up. typically they would be completely booked. this would be huge weekend but every one of their rooms was cancelled on friday

the bullet. jennifer davis has the latest in cape cod. >> you are absolutely right. new england was getting ready if preparing a big storm but in the end, earl blew on by. today it has been a picture perfect day as locals scramble to get back to business as usual. >> earl weakening from a mighty hurricane to a tropical storm still bringing with it plenty of wind and waves but not nearly enough to bother new englanders that is used to all sorts of rough weather. >> we were hoping for more of that. >> it came down in preparation what could be a serious blast of hurricane-force wind and rain but the signs are going back up and business owners hope it will be economically viable labor day weekend. >> this was a nothing storm. we have regular windy days that are 50 mile-an-hour winds southwesterly. >> massachusetts suffered a few hundred power outages and downed power lines and isolated flooding. in places like maine more rain and dangerous surf but no damage report. what is tropical storm earl leaving blue skies in its wake. >> reporter: biggest impact was an economic one, places like the orlea
